Ok, I gotta ask some real questions, just because I might be missing something. I stream across all my electronics. I understand the Actors and Writers strikes, the demands, and such. However, I am not certain this was the most effective way to negotiate. As the rest of the world is not on strike, and they are producing high quality content. For them, this strike is gold to break into the U.S. Market. Plus, the huge back log of content already in the can because of COVID, and post production not being on strike (editing, distribution, advertising), and what not, studios aren’t inspired to negotiate. Studios can create mega ads for these productions. So, between International products available from 6 Continents, people with smart TVs that can dub foreign language into English, and rapidly coming new content, and stuff in the can, like endless backlog stuff in the can, who are these strikes hurting? I am pretty certain not the studios. As I just looked at my multiple streaming platforms (we don’t do cable anymore), there is new content all over the place. Wouldn’t it be better to go after the Streaming platforms instead? Like no consent to use my image on your platform unless I get paid, or something like that?
I mean, just because actors and writers aren’t working here, they are all still working and doing full production abroad. Isn’t that a real concern. I stand in solidarity with actors and writers. However, it is looking more and more like this wasn’t thought through. Eventually people are going to have to eat. Otherwise, there is definitely going to be more reality tv. Sans script. Sans professional actors. The studios will pay them. They will be happy to get those checks. That is reality. Maybe striking isn’t the answer. I think everyone wants a shade of grey and not just black and white. Just saying.
Remember, the recorded voice, has been around longer than the writer. Longer than the actor. We need to think about how we are negotiating.
By no means am I siding with Studios straight across. However, actors, and writers, if you want to negotiate, you really need to think this thru globally. Also, about what is already in the can. How many ways can that be edited.
Families don’t need to miss the holidays or sacrefice because of strikes. Maybe, end this strike, and strike a different way. One where actors and writers in the U.S. aren’t suffering. Just saying. I may be off base. But this is definitely how it is coming across.
