As this is my home town and I have many many friends and family that still live there, I just say be safe. We grew up in the water and they were here way before us. We just must respect them and learn to cohabitate.

that looks cleverly photoshopped to me. It was half a mile out, it might be believable. But if you look at the height of that wave compared to where those kids sit – on the east coast that would have to be a Tidal wave, and having spent many hours on the east coast beaches (NJ, FL) – it is unlikely a wave that size was anywhere near NY. IMO but the photoshoppers get more clever all the time including placing frames into video to fool anyone who doesn’t know how easy it is to do. Just a thought from a surf fisherman and avid beach goer. Happy swimming! 🙂

I’m a West Coast surfer and have many friends who are either pro, daily or a documentarian surfers. I also can say I personally have accidentally swam with some great white sharks up close and didn’t know it, but my friends were able to set me out of the water safely. I was swimming in Catalina Island water from a moored yacht to shore. I am very lucky to be alive in many bizarre instances I have been through.
When I lived in Santa Barbara a couple of years ago there were 2 shark fatalities within 3 months. I think it’s more common on the west coast because of the cold water. But oh yeah, I think real picture.

ah maybe you’re right – anything is possible. You need a big wave and exactly correct sunlight angle position on that wave to see anything in the Atlantic Ocean. A large fish that size would be risking getting beached too. But on LBI, NJ back in 1916, someone lost a leg to a Great White – they were probably on other side of sandbar. They did not survive attack. What I have a problem with is the size of that wave in proportion to how close it appears to the beach. As a surfer, you know waves don’t get that big off NY unless a hurricane is going on. Well Happy surfing and New year!

my bad! I just realized this is on West Coast and not off Manhattan, NY. duh! Ok I know nothing about West coast wave sizes and surf. So, I concede my complete ignorance on that subject. Maybe it is a real photo! *L*
